PIPPRODUCTIONS brings to life international literary works in original and inspiring locations.

The London-based theatre company was founded in 2003 by Henriette Baker with a will to create new or renewed enthusiasm for emblematic novels from around the world.

Each play is created in a unique space, carefully chosen for its particular atmosphere in order to immerse the audience fully into the world of the text. Often the adaptations are written with a location in mind. Madame Bovary (2003) was first created and performed for a beautiful 17th century Parisian ‘hôtel particulier’ that lived up to the world of Emma’s fantasies. The hopes and dreams of Emma Bovary were enacted all around the audience and through the many doors that weave around the apartment, gradually becoming more oppressive and spiralling out of control.

Productions are rehearsed in the venue throughout the rehearsal process so that every nook and cranny is put to use. Crescendos in Blue (2007) was first performed in the elegant Art Deco library of the French Institute in London. The light, swirling, avant-garde and rather unconventional architecture of the space corresponded exactly to the atmosphere of the book and enabled a fluidity of movement for the performers who constantly surprised the audience by using locations, above, behind and below the seated area.

On every project PIPPRODUCTIONScollaborates with artists who have never worked in theatre before: musicians, fashion designers, fine artists. The company has toured internationally from the Avignon Theatre Festival, to remote boathouses in Scotland and outdoor amphitheatres in Bali.

“Come and salute these young talents who have the faces of angels and are determined to conquer France and England.” - Claire Demaison, E-gazette
